GETTING AWAY WITH IT BY
TIM SOUTHWELL
The story of loaded is one of the most remarkable in British media history. When it launched in 1994 the men’s magazine market was full of snooty and condescending fashion journals.
Irreverent, adventurous and above all funny, loaded hit the newsstands like a publishing hurricane. Things would never be the same again.
About Tim
Tim Southwell didn’t exactly know how to be a journalist so he created his own fanzine, Zine, blogging interviews with Paul Weller, Frank Spencer and Pierre The Surfing Carrot. He worked as a feature writer for Record Mirror, NME and Smash Hits before teaming up with James Brown to help create loaded, which saw him behind the ropes at the Ryder Cup, interviewing the Simpsons, and out of his depth pot-holing with a non-English speaking Romanian.
Since loaded, Tim has launched GolfPunk magazine in the UK, USA, Germany, Singapore and China. He also found time to be Editor of Sony Magazine and consult for lots of different publications including, most importantly, Danger Mouse and The Beano.
Inspired by his work at The Beano, Tim created his own comic book, Pugs In Space, based on the intergalactic adventures of his sausage-hunting pet dogs. He was also Launch Editor of the national PTA Magazine which just goes to show. Something. Probably.
Awards include:
- IPC Commissioning Editor of the Year 1997
- Editor of the Year BSME (British Society of Magazines) 2006
- Editor Of The Year IPA (Independent Publishers Awards) 2006
- Prince of Pontins, Shanklin, 1972.
